Providing For Critical Illness
Critical illness cover pays a tax-free lump sum or annuity style benefit if you are diagnosed as having one of the illnesses specified in the policy.
The cover can help with care costs, medical bills or even travelling abroad for treatment. All policies include the main critical illnesses people suffer from including major heart attack, stroke and various forms of cancer.
As with life insurance, policies can be taken out on a single life or joint life basis to reflect your circumstances and to meet your specific requirements. Premiums can also be fixed at outset of the policy or set to be reviewed as your situation and plans for the future change.
Critical illness cover can be taken out on two bases:
- A standalone critical illness insurance policy is ideal if you already have sufficient life insurance. This policy would then pay out if you were diagnosed with a critical illness, and you would still have life cover.
- A combined life insurance and critical illness policy pays out if you die and/or if you get a critical illness. You can set up a policy to pay out both in the event of critical illness and death, or in the event of whichever occurs first.
